City That Tells a Thousand Stories
Kaunas has a unique knack for blending eras, offering visitors the chance to travel through time in a single afternoon. Begin your journey at Kaunas Castle, a 14th-century fortress that whispers medieval tales, and stroll down to Santaka Park, where the rivers Nemunas and Neris embrace, said to be the cradle of the city itself. Nearby, the freshly renovated. Kaunas City Hall – nicknamed “The White Swan” – dazzles visitors with its history and newly curated exhibits.
But the past doesn’t stop there. Modernist architecture, so distinctive it’s earned UNESCO World Heritage recognition, defines much of Kaunas. Wander through Laisvės Alėja, one of Europe’s longest pedestrian streets, and marvel at the interwar buildings that make the city feel like an open-air museum of 1930s design. Climb aboard the historic Aleksotas funicular – among the oldest still operating in Europe – to take in sweeping skyline views from Aleksotas Hill, or head up to the rooftop terrace of Christ’s Resurrection Basilica on the opposite side of the city to enjoy a full 360‑degree panorama over Kaunas.
Kaunas also wears its creative heart on its sleeve. Its vibrant street art scene–sparked by murals like “The Wise Old Man”–adds splashes of colour and storytelling to its urban fabric. Don’t miss the Yard Gallery, a project that turned a quiet courtyard into an open-air museum filled with photographs and painted memories of Kaunas’ past.
