Giovanni Apolone, MD is a distinguished Italian physician and researcher with a prolific career in oncology, clinical research, and health care evaluation. He earned his MD from the University of Pavia, followed by post-doctoral degrees in Internal Medicine and Clinical Pharmacology. His professional journey spans over four decades, marked by leadership roles in some of Italy’s most prestigious medical research institutions, including the Mario Negri Institute and the Fondazione IRCCS Istituto Nazionale dei Tumori di Milano, where he currently serves as Scientific Director. 

Dr. Apolone has held numerous influential positions, such as President of the Organization of European Cancer Institutes (OECI) and member of various national and international scientific boards and ethics committees. His work has significantly shaped the fields of oncology drug development, cancer pain management, and health outcomes research. He has also contributed to European and Italian health policy through his roles in advisory groups for the Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Universities and Research. 

His research interests are broad and impactful, encompassing methodological, ethical, and regulatory aspects of clinical trials, particularly in oncology. He has been instrumental in developing and validating tools for patient-reported outcomes and case-mix measures, and has led numerous international collaborations. With over 300 publications, including 219 indexed in PubMed and an H-index of 60 (Scopus, 2025), Dr. Apolone is widely recognized for his scientific contributions and leadership in advancing cancer research and patient care.
