Assoc. Prof. Dr. Valdas Pečeliūnas

Director of the National Cancer Center | Lithuania

Prof. dr. Valdas Pečeliūnas is currently one of the leading professionals contributing to the development of a Comprehensive Cancer Care Center in Lithuania. 

Since November 20, 2023, Assoc. Prof. Dr. V. Pečeliūnas has been leading the National Cancer Center and also works as a hematologist. Prior to his appointment as Director of the National Cancer Center, he served as the Director of Medicine at Vilnius University Hospital Santaros Clinics. Assoc. Prof. Dr. V. Pečeliūnas continues to combine his roles as both an institution leader and a practicing oncologyst. 

He graduated from the Kaunas University of Medicine, specializing in internal medicine and hematology. He defended his doctoral dissertation at Vilnius University. Assoc. Prof. Dr. V. Pečeliūnas is also actively involved in scientific research and has published over 20 international scientific articles in the fields of hematology and oncology. 

His main goal is to promote close collaboration between scientific research and clinical practice. This approach helps to improve the accessibility and quality of oncology services and fosters the implementation of innovations in clinical practice. Also, one of the key directions of the National Cancer Center’s strategy is a strong focus on patient experiences and the well-being of its staff. 

Assoc. Prof. Dr. V. Pečeliūnas also takes an active role in public outreach—encouraging citizens to participate in cancer screening programmes. He emphasizes the importance of early diagnosis, healthy lifestyles, personalized medicine, and technological advancement in the fight against cancer.
